Classic online slots may indeed sport a significantly more humble design than the majority of their younger, more advanced siblings called video slots, but they are still just as eagerly played all over the world. As classic slots feature a more simplistic and old fashioned look, they inspire a tinge of nostalgia in players with their familiar fruit symbols, lucky sevens, traditional bells and bars. Slots originated in land-based casinos and worked their way online, which then evolved into the more modern-day video slot.

A traditional classic slot machine would generally be the most basic of games with no exciting features at all. However, even software providers that are producing these classic slots have been making them slightly more modern, including one of two added extras to help you try and win a bit more. In fact, there’s often a fine line nowadays between classic slots and video slots.

Classic slots look about the same, but still, they do differ from each other. Every slot machine has its own symbols and extra features which will make sure more winning combinations are possible. Just like the symbols, the winning combinations vary per slot machine. As usual, winnings will be made on the three reels between one and five bet lines, the rows of symbols that trigger a win. Bet lines can either be horizontal or diagonal. There can be more than one pay-out line per game, depending on which classic slots game you’re playing.

How do you pick a winning slot machine?
This ranking provides detailed statistics and a forecast of winnings for the slot machines considered. The graph is constructed taking into account the following parameters:

* Slot’s RTP
* Slot variance
* Number of winning combinations

Classic slot machine win statistics are given only for casinos with a projected maximum return in the next month. The average monthly RTP of a slot can be calculated only on long-term game series (we collect statistics for a month). If during the previous period the slot machine showed RTP below the average value, there is a high probability that this month the percentage of return will be higher than the value set by the developer. Move your mouse cursor over any point of the blue graph (last nine months) and you will see the average monthly RTP in the current period. The red line is the average annual RTP specified by the provider.

The history of the classic slot machines
The first slot machine classic can be dated back to the late 19th Century. Developed by Sittman and Pitt in 1891, the first game could be found in bars across the country. But what is in a slot machine? Well, the first slot machine style game had 5 drums and a total of 50 playing cards. To play, gamblers would insert a nickel, pull the lever and hope for a poker hand to line up on the reels. To increase the house edge and make things harder for players, the jack of hearts and the ten of spades were removed from the game. This reduced the odds of landing a royal flush by a whopping 50%. As the game has no direct payout mechanism, wins were paid at the bar in the way of free drinks, crisps, and cigars.

The first symbols
The first slot machine contained 5 symbols – diamonds, hearts, spades, horseshoes and the liberty bell. However, the symbols were replaced with fruit when slot machines with cash payouts were banned in 1902. Since cash prizes were now illegal, the design was changed to fruit symbols, and the prizes were chewing gum and sweets of appropriate flavors. In 1907 Herbert Mills released a slot machine called Operator Bell. A year later the game was found in most bars, bowling alleys, stores and tobacconists. In addition to fruit symbols, Operator Bell used the BAR symbol based on the Bell-Fruit logo.

The first video slot
The first classic video slot was developed in 1976 by Fortune Coin of Las Vegas. The machine was first available at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas and used a modified 19-inch Sony TV as its display. After many modifications and cheating tests, the video slot was approved by the Nevada Gaming Commission, and it soon became popular on the Las Vegas Strip. In 1978 the company was taken over by the multinational gaming company IGT.
